The Elvis Has Left The Building Sandwich

A Southern favourite, the Elvis Sandwich, was supposedly devoured by The King on a daily basis. The combination of peanut butter, banana and bacon in a sandwich, fried in bacon fat was as peculiar as it was unhealthy.

However, if there was anything Elvis knew better than music, it was food. It’s comfort food at its finest. Warm, gooey, delicious. The Elvis Sandwich is usually met with initial trepidation and inquisitiveness. But it’s down home southern charm and flavour has captured many a heart (and stomach). It is a staple in some of the finest diners in the country.

I thought I’d try a modern, healthier version of the sandwich. Weighing in at about 500 calories, it’s a sandwich fit for a King a la 2009. While Elvis may not be around to try this version of his namesake – I hope he’d approve!

You gotta try it to believe it.

  1. Prepare the veggie bacon in the microwave as per directions.
  2. Spread peanut butter evenly on both slices of bread. Layer banana slices and bacon strips on your bread. Close sandwich.
  3. Lighlty grease a frying pan over medium heat and cook sandwich until lighlty browned, about 2 minuts per side. Same method as  for a grilled cheese.
